Three Monkeys, WestEnd

The Three Monkeys Coffee & Teahouse, 58 Mollison St, Westend

Ambience
I'd give the place 8 out of 10 for Ambience...remembering that 10 is perfection and most likely unattainable, 8.5 is a pretty darn good score. It's such a treat every time I'm there, it's a sensory overload experience!
I have a penchant for the dark side so their dim lit rooms and wooden furnishings tick all my boxes. Love their dark. Away from the counter, as you nagivate through the long corridor of sitting rooms, you notice drapes everywhere, even on the ceiling, as well as an assortment of Aztec-esque masks and the dark.
It's packed most weekend nights so it may be hard to find a good table when with more than 3 people, but once you are settled in it's cosy, and the lull of background chatter somehow enables talk. I mean really talk...everytime I go there I have some deep conversations from the failings of democracy to what would Jesus really have done? Probably the latin jazz in the background and crafty ornaments and red lighting makes you feel a tad bit 'cool' and obviously very expressive as I took note of tables of artists, international students, 'ecletics' who like to say f#ck a lot. People watching is really on a different level here.
Afterall it's in the WestEnd, and all the nomadic/self-professed artistically inclined/'eclectic' people I've met seem to be from the WestEnd.

Food
I've yet to try something from the kitchen, but their coffee is good and their chai tea...amazing. "It's big" is all I can say.
Their selection of sweets is alright, but not the greatest I must say, but could be worse.
Think sort of coffee club or McCafe which sucks because I think they can really afford to mix it up and bring in some alternative dessert dish.
I wanted a rocky road slice, they had everything BUT rocky road slice.
They could improve the selection, but their hot beverages are good. I've noticed though most people get just drinks and not really food. It's really more of a late night coffee sesh kinda place, so while snacks are on the menu, probably not somewhere you'd go for proper meals.Ambience over food though is how I'd describe this place. It's alternative, but it's popular and it's totally cool. I really recommend this place, you should visit at least once!

  1. that picture is the sparsest ive ever seen their cake cabinet!

Ive eaten their foccacias/sandwiches and they arent fab... I think its best to just go have a hot beverage and a cake and enjoy the atmosphere rather than get lunch or dinner there.
